What is American Arts Incubator?


The American Arts Incubator, formerly known as smARTpower, sends American visual artists abroad to collaborate with local artists and young people around the world on the creation of community-based art projects. Focusing on direct community engagement that encourages dialogue, experimentation and creativity, this 45-day program is designed to stimulate discourse around local or global social issues including the environment, education, health, girls and women’s issues and freedom of expression.

Who is eligible for American Arts Incubator?



Public applications are accepted. Qualifying criteria:

  • Emerging, mid-career or established new media and/or digital artists.
  • U.S. citizens at least 18 years of age and residing in the U.S. at the time of the project.
  • Strong record of artistic accomplishments with examples of international experience.
  • Relevant experience working with youth and/or underserved communities.
  • Record of engaging with artists, art educators, youth, and/or community members through teaching, workshops, social practice, and other outreach activities.
